Music and Readings for Advent with Refugium Chamber Choir

Sunday November 27th at 7pm in Bosbury Church HR8 1QT on the B4220

And breathe…..

Four weeks before Christmas the scene is often one of frantic preparations, endless lists, excited children, planning festive cooking. For some it may be a time of loneliness, or worry about what the winter will bring.

Here is a moment to step aside from all the busy-ness, to step into the peace and beauty of Bosbury Church. In the Stillness is a programme of music and readings for the Advent season. The music, which illustrates biblical and non-biblical readings,  ranges from the 16th century to the present day, including choral gems by Sweelinck, Mendelssohn, Hassler, MacMillan, Elizabeth Poston, Britten and Sally Beamish.

Refugium Chamber Choir was formed in the wake of lockdown by a group of friends who had sung together in several different acclaimed choirs in Herefordshire, Cardiff and beyond. The choir has a shared love of singing, but also coffee, cake, curry, cats and cricket! They sing without a conductor and have established a reputation for an impressive blend of individual voices in an eclectic range of music.

This event is free to attend. There will be a retiring collection in aid of church funds and the Ledbury Food Bank. Interval drinks and seasonal nibbles will be served, with donations invited.

Concert for All Saints and Remembrance – Saturday 20th November @7:00pm

Following the successes of Music for All in August and Broomdasher in October, we’re now looking forward to a concert for All Saints and Remembrance on Saturday 20th November 2021. This will be the first performance for newly-formed chamber choir Refugium!

Refugium is a brand new chamber choir formed in the wake of lockdown. The impact of the pandemic on the Arts is well known – not only in terms of the financial impact on musicians, singer, directors, actors and theatre staff but also in terms of the great benefits that singing and performing bring to friendship, mental health and wellbeing. Refugium’s various members had sung together in several different acclaimed choirs in Herefordshire, Cardiff and beyond and, as soon as it was possible to meet again, some sessions in Bosbury Church were organised. The choir has a mutual appreciation not only for singing, but also coffee, cake, cats, curry and cricket! This is the choir’s first concert, but we hope to continue. If you would like to be kept informed of future events please contact Esther Kay on ekflute@googlemail.com or 01531 670634.

We are very fortunate in Bosbury church to have the benefit of the Grade 2 listed Speechly and Ingram organ with an unusually extensive palette of sounds which you will hear in the programme tonight. This historic instrument is in need of some refurbishment to save it for future generations, and details of an appeal will be made known shortly.
